  • Chicken with a swollen eye

One of chickens appears to have a swollen eye today. I don't know if one of the others has pecked her, of if she's caught it having a scratch.
Any advice on the best way to care for it?

What do you get if you divide the circumference of a pumpkin by its diameter?
    Pumpkin pi.

    Ouch!!

Gently bathe her eye in warm salt water..a small pinch to a cupful of cooled boiled water is about right.
Gently squeeze it over her eye to rinse it.
If she opens it a bit try and see if there is a small seed or something stuck in there. If there is try and flush it out by pouring the saline over it.
Don't be tempted to try and pick anything out or you could cause scratching

maybe try and do it 3 times a day???

I hope her eye is better soon. Warm salt water is great for things like that, good luck. Let us know how you get on.

Keep an eye on her other eye and nose in case it's the beginning of a cold etc

My girls eye is still swollen and she's very lethargic. I've been bathing her eye with salt water regularly, but it doesn't seem to be improving. Think I'm going to give the vet a call today.

I think that's a good idea skeggijon - if it needs treatment, the sooner the better... keep us informed?

Took her to the vet, who said she's got sinusitis and conjunctivitis and put her on a course of antibiotics.
