Well that's the result folks. Last thread has been closed. All I can say is I was a Counting Agent last night and my feet are really, really sore! Hopefully the politicians will get off the telly and let me watch Star Trek in peace.

    You have a rest then
So Scotland gets more devolution - well done them!

Now all the arguments start about who can vote for what in Parliament - so that England also gets the right to decide some stuff for itself, in the same way as the other parts

Can you imagine the chaos over the next few months OMG

There is no chance that only English MP's will be able to vote for English only matters...do you think the Labour Party will let 40 odd votes be dropped? Remains to be seen what extra powers Scotland gets, nothing really was promised and back bench MP's have already said they will veto any proposals. It also has to pass through the House of Lords...

In my lifetime the absence / presence of the Scottish MPs would have made no difference to the working majority of the party in power, except on a couple of occasions where there were very slim majorities - and those governments were shaky anyway - so I am doubting that there is any argument to be had along the lines of "We woz robbed"!

In 2013 the "Barnett formula" gave Scots 20% more [in state spending] per person than England, replacing that with local tax raising sounds good to me, then Scotland et al can Tax & Spend as their local parliament sees fit.

Don't think that English people won't demand equal powers - many people this side of the border are quite cross about it, in the same way as the Scots were. The Welsh are raising the same ponts.

In the end, all parts of the Union have to be happy.

Agree wholeheartedly Thelma! Always puzzles me why England are the only country in the UK that does not have devolved powers somewhere. I think, if nothing else, this debate has opened a whole new can of worms when in comes to politics in the Uk...for the better I hope.

As I understand it Scotland gets more spending per head than other parts of the country but I'm also sure that Scotland pays more tax per head than anywhere else?

The Scots pay less income tax per head (presumably because average income is lower), the other things (VAT / corporation tax / fuel duty / etc.) are about the same, but they pay North See Oil revenues, which are treated as almost exclusively Scottish, and that amounts to approx an addition 10% of the per capital tax of the average Scot.

Don't forget that Scotland already gets, from the UK Treasury, more per person than (under the Barnet formula) than England.
                England £7,121
                Scotland £8,623
                Wales £8,139
                Northern Ireland £9,385

The United Federal Kingdom is coming. It could take 10 years, but the seeds are there.

Its not about who pays less and who pays more...The simple fact is we are still better together...Is that not what we have been voting for on the 18th september.."Better Together"

45% of the Scottish electorate disagrees with you

                              Indeed, that's democracy at work

Whilst I am of the opinion that we are better together, I don't think NO being the winners of the referendum makes it "fact" as such, just that that is what the majority have chosen to do. The folk who voted YES won't have changed their minds since yesterday ... so their wishes need to be accommodated, to the best of the ability of the NO voters - particularly as the vote was close - to put it at an extreme, if only 1% had voted YES then they could have been ignored, but I don't think 45% should be, just because they "lost".
