I use poultry shield, and would never consider using anything that wasn't designed for the job. as it may harm the chickens!

As Pumpkin has said ^^^. I wouldn't use ant powder, you don't really know if anything in it is harmful to the birds. It could burn their skin.
Diatom can be used for the coop and also for putting on the bird. It's worthwhile adding it to their dust bath as well. Though if you have a heavy infestation you will need to give the coop a good scrub and clean out. They multiply rapidly so you need to keep in top of it.

we got 11 hens last week from the local chicken farm and havent spotted any mites so far, just wanted some thing that had a residual effect to make it unsuitable for them to get a hold from the off.

I have poultry shield (not yet used) and diatom (which I have put on the sand coop floor, in the nest boxes and in the dust bath.

I use creosote on my hen houses. Inside and out, ideally this needs to be left to dry and the fumes gone before you introduce the birds. Use diatom liberally on the houses every week.
