  • Hello September

    Hello September . . .

    "By all these lovely tokens
    September days are here,
    With summer’s best of weather
    And autumn’s best of cheer."
Courtesy of Helen Hunt Jackson (1830-1885)

I like September. A good month for harvesting the year's crops and for foraging.! Its not really Autumn as to me, that means the leaves are turning and falling. Hoping for a warm spell this month - like last year.
What does September mean to you?

Hmmm September means SCHOOL Both my two will be at school in September.
But I find we can have some really nice weather to. We can have what we call an Indian Summer. Don't know if other people call it something else.
I think in September you notice a change in the weather especially towards the end of it.
Food wise I will be going round to my elderly neighbours and picking even more blackberries and cooking apples. In swaps my mom makes them jam, crumbles and pies.
With all my free time I hope to have my plot sorted or at the early October at the latest.

Darker nights and the arrival of Orion and Betelgeuese, must go look for the Pleiades.
But not cold enough to freeze a couple of bits off me.
        That comes in February usually.

I love September too...just that bit cooler ( normally)so less watering...and my potted geraniums just reaching their best display;the gathering in of plums, pears, apples and hazelnuts from the garden and collecting of mushrooms, sloes, chestnuts etc from the hedgerows and woods;the surprise of the first of the falling leaves and the first of the wood fires.
Mustn't forget the pride I feel when I try to find a spare place on the cellar shelves for another jar of something I've made!
          Lovely.

Mm, I love Autumn the best of all seasons, and am happy it's arriving. I like the cooler air, the golden light, the sense of things starting to die back, the hangover from school/uni of the new academic year starting (yes, I actually like that!) I love foraging and making jams and chutneys. 'Tis also the season of book festivals and time to pick up the interests neglected over the summer, when gardening took every bit of spare time. And I'm full of optimism for next year's gardening. Which flies in the face of reason, really, but hey, a girl can dream.

September used to mean very hard work, being on my feet for 12 or 13 hours a day and getting little sleep as I ran an academic bookshop; we'd spend August and early September unpacking, pricing and stacking pallets and pallets of textbooks and then would do 25% of our annual turnover in the last week of the month, followed by another 35% in the next three weeks. It was brilliant fun, Mr PP had to do the cooking for a few weeks (less good) and a lot of beer was consumed. I miss working with students - they kept me young!
Now it means pickling, chutnifying, bottling and drying produce. Long walks and rides not in blistering heat and keeping an eye out for the first snow of the year in the mountains - I can still see a little left from last year

yep a wet start to the month. I've taken a couple of days off work to get some lotty jobs done and looks like I'll have to limit myself to the polytunnel.

                  First day of autumn ...

Every season has its beauty. For me its the colours of autumn that I love.
And when the leaves start to fall it reminds one that the cycle of life is starting to turn once again.

Though already dreaming of six long months hence and the return of spring ....
Pain is still pain, suffering is still suffering, regardless of whoever, or whatever, is the victim.
                  Everything is worthy of kindness.

September depresses me, every bug known to man seems to proliferate, things begin to die back and there are big hairy spiders everywhere.

Autumn is a sad time of year for me - but we are one step nearer the leafless trees and crisp frosty walks in the park! Here is hoping for a good sunshine for a few months.

OMG yes! There was a huge one in the washing up bowl this morning. I swear leg to leg it was 3" across Fortunately I was able to carry it out in the bowl and fling it down the front lawn, the spider that is, not the bowl. (front door was nearest )

The leaves starting turning and falling 2 weeks ago here in north London so autumn feels almost here already.

September is a glorious month, especially when the sun shines. No longer summer, but not quite autumn, misty mornings, warm afternoons, that lovely earthy smell as trees start to drop their leaves.

Another thing I love about this time of year is spotting little tables outside houses with an honesty box and carrier bags full of apples or a full punnet of plums for a pound. It's the season of bounty.
