  • I am thinking....

About putting my name down for an allotment. At the moment I only have a small back garden and I want to grown more! Just can't fit everything in my garden.

So I just wanted to know before I do put my name down is there any good/bad things about having an allotment that I need to know?

I suppose it depends how much time you have to devote to it. Go to any allotment and you will immediately see who has the most time and no ties lol. I just love the idea of getting it in from the garden. How bigs yours?

You just need to consider the time element really. Are you allotments local to you? Do you have enough spare time to tend the plot as you don't want a letter from the allotment police.

My kids are grown now and I have no other ties meaning my plot should be perfect but it's nowhere near being that.

It's 40ft x 15ft. But because I live with my parents at the moment, my mum will not let me take over her garden. So I have a a small patch about 4ft x 7ft. Plus I have my raised bed greenhouse at the side on the patio.

The overwhelming factor in my view is convenience. I'm about 2 1/2 miles from the Hill - which is just about doable in term of I can cycle there in about 15mins, run in just under 30, and 10mins in the car. I prefer not to take the car if I don't have to as it defeats part of the point of growing your own (i.e. saving money)

I've put raised beds on my half plot (25ft x 55ft) to make it managable and I have to be there once a week for maybe 3hrs in winter, and about 4 times a week for a couple of hours a time in the summer.

What are your waiting lists like?

I live close to 3 of them. And I tend to work 3/4 nights a week at work. But I hardly sleep when I work. So I will have time.

I'd go for it - you can always give it up if it doesn't suit you.

I am not really sure. I don't know anyone with an allotment. I could ask Chris on here because he is from Bolton and has an allotment. Maybe he could tell me how long he waited for his.

Then go for it, now is an ideal time as rents are due soon so people will be quitting.

I'm assuming all rents are due the same time, the might not be.

It said on the site they take rent in October. So maybe it could be a good perfect birthday present for me if I got an allotment

Ours is October too, people on our site are already giving notice so get your name on that list.
