My little potted Rosemary plant went woody and died, the leaves went crispy brown on the ends and it stopped sending out new shoots. Is this normal?

Me and herbs do not mix!

Did you see any shiny iridescent beetles on it before it died? It could be rosemary beetle - their little grubs can decimate plants. Rosemary should last years normally.

No, there were no beetles on it, I have read about those critters! Nothing out of the ordinary I'm afraid

Perhaps you started using it to soon? If you cut into old wood it doesn't grow. I had several bushes die in the cold winters a few years ago but generally they are hardy plants....though often the cheap potted herbs from the likes of @sd@ often don't last very long
