  • Roses online

I'm looking out for a pair of tree roses ( the ones on a tall stem with a big ball on top) ideally I would like them to be 4ft + , prefer pinks and repeat flowering would be great. Perfume a bonus.

I've looked in a few GC and they don't seem to do them. Am I best ordering online. David Austin do several bare root ones for delivery from November. Anyone know what the quality is like? They don't look that cheap so I don't want to make a mistake.

I've bought dozens of David Austen roses over the years, because I've moved a few times, and never received a weak plant.
Although they're not cheap I couldn't fault the plants..... I've never grown standard roses, though.

Thank you Thelma, they are £40 each so I really don't want to make a mistake. I've looked at them for a couple of weeks on the DA site with my finger hovering over the buy it button and I've chickened out. Garden centres just don't seem to stock them. If I pre order now I'm guaranteed ones that fit the bill.

david austin is the way to go .... if you are buying bare root, and they don't take, they will replace them with no quibbles in the spring

I have planted loads of bare root for my clients and all have taken .... just plant them accoring to the instructions, and prepare the planting holes well, with good compost .... also use rootgrow (it works)

Yes Dim they are bare root. That was another worry, what month do they usually arrive - with my luck the ground will be frozen!

Well I've always know them as tree roses - it states both on the David Austin site

Another vote for DA. Excellent stock and service.

Hi scarlet, I got given a David Austin rose as a gift in may, planted it in the garden late may and it has grown really well in just three months. It looks like its been there for ever. Was in a pot not bare root. Very pale pink and smells wonderful.
                  Defiantly recommend DA.

Personally, I would not use David Austin as they are almost as expensive as it gets to buy any rose. There are plenty of good established rose nurseries around where you can pay much less than DA charge but can expect the same quality and terms. I'd have a look at British Roses.

Two strongly scented roses I have grown and can recommend, that are stocked as standards are the white rose A Whiter Shade Of Pale (my photo) and the crimson rose Velvet Fragrance (someone else's photo). For a more pastel type coral-red there is Fragrant Cloud, whose perfume is intense, but it is more susceptible to blackspot.

If you like a butter-yellow, a good scented one there is Korresia (my photo).

Love the look of whiter shade of pale.

My DA rose is pink, called the wedgewood.
Does look pretty but very full flowers, which seemed a bit heavy for the plant.

Is that a standard/tree rose or a shrub? That the kind of flower I'd like. I live in an old old house and it's for the front border.... Looking for a little old fashioned romance.
I have a shrub with these flowers and they are gorgeous.

It's a climbing rose. The label says "old Rose style blooms".
I didn't know there was new and old styles! 😀
