If you do as my Dad used to anything that will rot down, all vegetable matter.

I don't do a tench but here's a recent thread which might help.

I saw this on a programme, might have had carol Klein in it. Basically vegetable peelings, newspaper, any sawdust waste from rabbits, Guinea pigs etc., seaweed, leaf mould, anything that will rot down.

Saying that my dad has grown runner beans in the same spot for 4 years and he just throws a bit of manure on every spring and has a bumper crop.

Our bean crop is fantastic. We don't use a trench either, just fertilise heavily.

My runner bean crop is great as well. I don't use a trench and I don't fertilise much, but I do water heavily every day.

I don't trench either, waste of time. Instead, I mulch my soil, all year round, with chopped up weeds & old plants, grass clippings etc.

As well as feeding the soil, it keeps weeds down & moisture in the soil.
