  • Does anyone start Autumn onion/garlic sets in pots?

Do you just put autumn onions sets and garlic cloves straight in the ground,or does anyone grow in pots, and then under lights before planting out with assisted growing techniques, just a thought but any answer is good.TIA seq.

I started mine off in cell packs last year as the autumn weather was really awful and ground conditions unsuitable for planting. Kept them in a cold greenhouse and planted out in spring. They did really well

i start onion sets in trays of compost in the greenhouse - it gives them a good headstart on the weeds - once they've sprouted and developed good roots, I dig the bed for them and plant out

garlic cloves go straight in the ground and hope for the best - i'll be using garlic from sainsburys again this year

I always start my garlic in the gh in modules. Planted direct, it just fails on my soil (I can grow good fat garlic in the school beds, but not on my allotment. My soil is too light & sandy & dry)

Onions in pots and garlic on SFG spacings in Morrisons buckets in the tunnel. My soil is usually just too wet and cold to be worth putting either out over Winter. The garlic doesn't go outside til it's quite big and I have run out of space inside.
