  • Moving Toms

    Hi all

When do I give up on tomatoes ripening on the plant?
We are not due any more warm weather just strong winds cold and rain. Shall I dig them up and try to ripen them myself? Or leave them where they are and hope for the best?

    They are outdoors

    Thanks

Leave them where they are, but pick anything that looks like it is starting to change colour, as they ripen perfectly well indoors once they start to turn. Keep an eye on them for blight. I wouldn't try to move them - they are very big and difficult to handle and you will probably find you knock off some of the fruit or break the stems. Whether or not to cover tomatoes with fleece when frost is forecast is a tricky one -they are usually too big to be covered easily, and the only time I ever did it the whole lot got blight the next day (probably a coincidence). If they do get cold they will simply stop growing and look bluish and miserable. If they do this you can then pick all the fruit and bring it in - some might ripen. If you (and they) can hang on until the end of next week, there are signs that things may warm up (back to normal for the time of year).

I'm leaving mine outdoors, and I am more worried about the prospects of blight than cold for the moment (my garden is relatively sheltered and usually a couple of degrees above the forecast minimum temperature).
