  • Does anyone cook their produce on their patch? If so what do you use?

    Afternoon all,

I was just wondering if anyone cooks any of their produce from their patch ON their patch and if so what equipment do you use?

I'm just curious as I would love to try see what I can cook on my patch from only the stuff grown on my patch.

    Thanks for your replies

    Samuel

Yep..Like BM and Hansmum, I have a couple of these. I've done sausages, and the odd bit of steak on the plot to have with salad. I've also cooked up my plot grown globe artichokes. Mmmmm. But defo the best thing is being able to have a nice cup of tea.

I have a Kelly Kettle (other makes are available) Kelly Kettle - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
You can boil water using twigs for fuel and there are kits available for heating soup etc on top of it.
Expensive but once you have it, all the hot water is free.

We cook on a bought-from-new (1991), made in Birmingham Shilton Supergrill. Anything from sweet corn, courgettes in garlic, eggs, halved little gem lettuce and any other veg (or sausage ) that cooks reasonably quick. This is our tea shed.

We have one of the butane gas rings like BM. Mainly use it for tea to be honest, but when pulling new potatoes its always nice to boil a few straight away and then eat with a little coarse sea salt and a pound of butter!

This brought back a lovely memory of being out on a boat in New Zealand. Our hosts moored us up and made tea with the clear lake water. Gathered a few twigs and hey presto. Tea, in the most beautiful setting, even with powdered milk, it tasted wonderful
                Thanks VC

I used to watch that Nigel Slater cookery programme on the Beeb (can't remember the name) and he used to do a little spot of going to someones allotment, then cooking something up.

It really appealed to me - and this thread has reminded me to give it a try.

Hopefully we can still get a fairly good, dry, bbq type weather day sometime during this month.

Anyway, being Scottish - I'll need to check how I rig up the deep fat fryer down on the plot.

I love cooking at the plot. I have a wee gas cooker that we salvaged from an empty plot years ago, it has two burners a grill and an oven, one of the caps that sit on top of the burner is missing so we only use one burner (keep forgetting to try and source a spare).

This week, we are attempting to make a wood burning stove from a gas bottle as we get free logs delivered to site on a regular basis and also being Scottish, I like the idea of free fuel

I don't know what your cooking skills are like, but looking at that shed you built - you could open up a michelin star restaurant.

Keep an eye out in the likes of B&M, Home Bargins or PoundStretcher as they are normally selling these off for around a tenner and the 4-packs of gas for around £4 at this time of year.
