  • A recommendation for 2015

    Hi everyone

if you are like me and starting to procrastinate about what to grow next year, may I recommend Runner Bean 'Firestorm'.

Thus far I have picked 18kgs of beans from 20 plants and they are still sending out flowers. As a self fertile variety the set rate is about 80% and the beans are stringless (when young) and have a lovely flavour.

    Really chuffed with them.

Yep, good call GL. I've grown 'em this year & have had loads of runners with more still to come.

Would these be ok to grow on a 7ft wig wam?, i don't have enough space for a row but would like to try these next year.
I tried dwarf runners this year in a tub but they wernt very successful.

I'd like to try them. Do they taste more like French beans, or runners, GL? 'Cos I'm not so keen on French beans.

Smashing, I'll try some then. It's frustrating to have runner bean flowers and see them drop off without setting early in the season, for whatever reason. They always do. So self setters should give me an earlier crop

Thanks GL, I'm gonna give them ago next year then.
I will report back in year on how well they are (hopefully) doing!

Sounds good, GL. Do you think you might save some seed and contribute it to the Virtual Seed Parcel?? Mind you, if you do we'll all be storming it now!

Hopefully the seed will save from the plants and at the current rate of growth I will have a sack full!

Second year for Firestorm, both years have been very successful. Do to the yield last year I was able to cut down the number of plants I grow to 12 which gives me more space for other things. So far this year we have had plenty to eat, given some away, requested by two of SWMBO's friends and just about have my annual supply in the freezer.

I love them with a baked spud a little salt and some butter.

As an added bonus for me they do very well in Morrison's buckets at one plant per bucket.

Have you joined the seed circle? It's worth joining...

Apart from beans grown from year after year saved runner bean seeds, I have grow Moonlight for the first time and they seem to be heavy croppers and nice eating beans. They were slow to get going but are a mass of flowers and beans now and are always full of bees, hoverflies and wasps.
Might try some Firestorm next year too.

I prefer Moonlight, I find the skins a bit rough on Firestorm - although it easier to germinate than Moonlight.

All the white seeded beans are a pain for germination IMO
