  • Autumn onion set varieties.

Hi, Can anyone recommend varieties of onion sets for planting out this autumn?

I used Shakespeare from sets this last year and am well pleased with them. Sourced from Marshalls Search results for shakespeare- Marshalls Seeds but I expect others will have them. Previously I grew Senshyu Yellow a japanese variety which never let me down

Same as AP, Senshyu are a pretty safe bet. Have never had much luck with red ones.

I sow senshyu seed now, as everytime I've used autumn sets yellow or red I have suffered with the onions bolting. I have better harvests using seed.

I grew Troy onions over winter and was delighted with my harvest - really good size and very few failures. I'll definitely grow them again this winter.

Wilkinsons have their onion sets in stock - £2 for 50. I bought Japanese (presume Senshyu (weight 180 grs)) and Snowball (220 grs) They also had a red one, shallots and garlic.
Then I went to What!! - the cheap shop, where they were selling any 3 packs of flowering bulbs or onions for £5, instead of £2.49 each. I bought Senshyu, Radar and Electric and these packs were 350grs, almost twice as many as in Wilkos.
Now all I have to do is decide where to plant 400 onion sets
