  • horse manure what grows best on it?

Ive been after manure for ages and its took so long for me to find some Ive forgot what I wanted it for....

Im going to pick some up anyway but was wondering what food and flowers do well on the stuff?

Despite what some people think it is not that potent, most stables use a lot of bedding / wood shavings which also dilutes it, there was a video on here some time ago of a guy growing wonderful carrots directly in horse manure. So I would say its more of a mild fertiliser cum soil conditioner and probably safe on most things.

most of it will be to bulk up my boarders as Im lacking in soil and the borders are quite low beside my lawn edge, but if it does well for other things then thats a plus

I grew potatoes in pure manure once and they produced far too much foliage and weird hairy spuds. I do use a bit in the bottom of my spud tubs now though more as a moisture retainer than a growing medium. I also spread it as a mulch between large brassicas over winter, and then plant hungry stuff like squashes into that bed once the brassicas are finished.

I only use it as I can get it delivered to my plot directly I use it for my pumpkins/courgettes really - as it retains so much moisture, they love it as they do require a fair bit of water.

I had 6 tons of cow poo delivered to my 125m2 plot last autumn. It was supposed to be between 3 of us but the other two dropped out leaving it all for me.

I spread it around and rotorvated it in with the exception of one small area.

The allotment chairman...an typical old boy said to me "you'll grow nothing at all in that plot this year, boy"......

Im currently picking about a dozen courgettes a day, a carrier bag of runners a day, loads of sweetcorn, the onions were amazing, leeks look fab, mangetout were great and salad crops were all super.
The only thing i don't use it on is carrots and parsnips.
