  • Just when you think things are getting better,,,

My son has been laid off after 3 days, the company has gone in to liquidation. Not sure what We're going to do now. He's absolutely devastated and I'm not sure what to do. He'll be home in a bit.

That's awful, Bex. What a disappointment for the lad, and how unkind of the company to start him on when they must have known they were a sinking ship. Hope he can stay optimistic for the future.

Doubt whoever took him on knew - what on earth would have been the point going through the interview/employment procedures and paperwork? Quite likely to have been a shock to the system for all - maybe a customer of theirs going bump, or the bank pulling the overdraft facility, for example.

He did 4 weeks work experience, unpaid. Friday they offer him a job. It was work experience through the job centre and the get 2 grand for everyone they employ. They will start up tomorrow under a different name and the job centre will do nothing. Thanks for the support. I think he's ok.

That's a real shame for your son, Bex. Although trying to look at least a little on the bright side, at least with the work experience he is more employable than when before he started.

Not sure what the job centre can do about a company who they place people with for work experience who goes bust. But if you you think that there is something dicey about how this company has operated, report them to Companies House.

And if it's any crumb of comfort, with the glacial speed that HMRC/Dept Work & Pensions work at, I bet they haven't parted with the £2k if he was only employed on Friday - they won't have processed the paperwork, and won't be able to make a payment to a company that doesn't exist anymore.

Thanks Hazel and everyone else. We panicked but then calm has descended and we are in the same place we were last week. Not ideal but we are here, existing, surviving and there are people far worse off.

                          Really sorry to hear this.

Hopefully the work experience will still be of value to Tom of itself and also as a CV enhancer. I'm sure the DWP will be prepared to testify that he did well, evidenced by his acceptance for a full time role, even if his ex-employers are not able to.

All the best in the next job hunt. Good people will always find something eventually.

                            That's really unfair!
No one should have to do that.

                            Poor lad.

Poor chap. He must keep uppermost in his mind that he was recruited so the company thought he was GOOD. He has interview experience. He knows that he IS employable! And this can only make him wiser and stronger.
