  • Gardening When It Counts: Growing Food in Hard Times by Steve Solomon

I'm re-reading this book. Seems fairly good to me but I'm sort of new at vegetable gardening.

I'm especially interested in hearing of any experiences with his recipe for Complete Organic Fertilizer, a.k.a., COF.

    Any opinions on this book?

    Thanks,
    Dan

Some of those amendments would be difficult to source here in the uk - Easier for you in the States I should think.

I haven't read that one, but I've read "Gardening Without Irrigation" and found some of the ideas in that very interesting, and logical when you stop to think it through.

Hope I never have to depend on the garden .
My last few years have been basically awful for any crops. Honestly getting to the idea of forget it. Never seen a half decent sized onion in years and only the first year did leeks amount to anything - last year the description pathetic was an exageration for them. Sure the first year was to con me into thinking I could grow some.

This year the garlics are like a bit of string. Haven't seen what is a the end but I do not think it is worth the effort to dig one up to find out.

Occasionally tomato's are OK and I seem to manage potato's if and only if they are in pots.

Forget carrots, turnip and swede, tried cauliflower and don't think I have seen one even germinate.

My soil is already alkaline, I wouldn't be adding any more lime. Soya meal? Maybe, if you have an abundant cheap supply (not in the UK). A Better Garden Fertilizer - Organic Gardening - MOTHER EARTH NEWS
