  • What made the small holes in my potatoes?

    Afternoon all,

I lost about half of my crop due to small holes bored by some insect into my potatoes and I was wondering if anyone know what did this & how can I prevent it happening in the future?

    Many thanks,

    Samuel

If the holes are very narrow it's probably wireworms particularly if you are planting in ground that was grass before.

If this is the case things do improve every year but I don't know of any magic bullets.

my robins love wireworms... dig the ground in spring and uncover the wireworms for the birds

Wireworms make small thin holes, slugs make small holes as well but they are more - um - slug shaped
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

Cutworms, keeled slug, wireworms and potato cyst eelworm all love your potato crop, I tried seed potatoes that were resistant to those little creatures, that works sometimes plus, do as greenishfing and arpoet advise above..Google pics of them to see what you are up against.

Best of luck for next year.
