  • Top soil

    Hi all

Apart from making clumpy clay look prettier and making the top inch a finer tilth what does top soil actually do?

    Thanks

Sorry Mumbles, as a Newbie, I have no idea but wanted to ask about the greenhouse thing you posted about yesterday...the thread seems to have disappeared. Apologies for going off topic!

          This one? http://www.growfruitandveg.co.uk/gra...ase_80344.html
Top soil is the top few inches of soil containing all the organic matter and nutrients and is good to grow in - the "subsoil" beneath it isn't as it isn't rich in nutrients. Where you see rocks exposed, there is no top soil.
By adding compost to your soil, you increase the depth of topsoil and make it more hospitable to deep rooted plants.
If you buy "top soil" is has probably been stripped off other land - possibly building sites.
Just talking off the top of my head really - I'm sure someone who knows what they're talking about will be along soon

Topsoil IS soil. At least it's the soil that is useful to us
