    Rust

    I have had a bad bout of "rust" this year on my garlic and I usually get it on my leeks. I believe you can also get rust on other plants.
    What if anything, does everyone do to minimise or get rid of this? Thanks

      I have fed my nursery bed of Leeks with Tomato fertiliser and have sprayed with Dithane . . . lets see if these help.

        That's for Puccinia recondita (wheat rust) though, does it work on Puccinia alli ? You're going to be eating those leeks, is the spray safe to eat?

          Ah, (light bulb goes on). The garlic was planted alongside onions in the same bed. This must of had a lot of nitrogen it, due to the rotted down animal manure. Also fed with a sprinkling of chicken pellets. Shall probably prepare garlic bed differently! How do you prepare your beds?

            Me? I don't do anything especially special. What I don't do:

            - hoe
            - dig
            - use sprays
            - use horsemuck or chicken pellets (or spend any more money than strictly necessary)



            I do make use of mulch: all my weeds and old plants are chopped up & dropped on the soil as a mulch. It's the quickest, bestest way of making compost, ime.
            I also use liquid comfrey tea, and occasionally wood ash on the onions, if I've had the chiminea on.

              My Dithane is 80% w/w Mancozeb . . .

              Mancozeb breaks down rapidly in soil, sediment and water; terminal metabolites are natural products and with mineralisation to carbon dioxide. It does not bioaccumulate. Animals Poorly absorbed and rapidly excreted in animals. T
              . . . is it safe to eat ? well I'm not going to eat it or the leeks in the next few months by which time I think it will be OK.

              Is it effective ? this company lists leek rust as something that can be treated with Mancozeb . . .
