    Newbie with a shiny new greenhouse and no idea!

    Hi everyone,

    this is a first post for me so please be gentle!

    I have just finally chosen and ordered my first greenhouse after wanting one for about 8 years (and what a minefield that was), garden restricting I have gone for a 6ft x 4ft Hercules Trafalgar (does anyone have any experience of these?) but I have just realised how clueless I actually am!

    So I guess my first question is what do I actually need to make it a useable greenhouse.....? staging? watering? propagators?
    I intend to do the usual toms, chilli's, start of veggies for my raised beds and start off a few flowers for hanging baskets.

    secondly, if I am doing raised beds is it best to sow directly into the beds or start off in the greenhouse and plant out after the seedlings have developed?


    Sorry for the lack of knowledge but any help would be greatly appreciated

    I have a similar sized greenhouse. I have aluminium staging either side which has removable shelves. I have shelves in for raising seedlings in the spring and then the shelves come out and I use the frame for supporting tomatoes and cucumbers.
    When is your greenhouse arriving. Unless you have plants on the go or can buy some from the garden centre you are a bit late for tomatoes and cucumber from seed for this year.
    I grow in pots as mine is on the patio.

      Not fully decided when to take delivery yet just a deposit paid at the moment , although I do plan to hopefully have everything ready for next years growing season , when you say either side is that both sides of the 4ft length?

        My gh is 10x6, and it's too small (they always are!).
        I have aluminium staging on one length, for potting on & sowing. On the other length I have the shelves from the £10 blowaways, which last about 5 years or so.
        In June, the blowaways are removed to make room for 10 litre pots, which the toms/cukes/aubergines go in

          Some veg grow perfectly well from direct sowing, carrots for example. Some such as mange touts can benefit from starting in warm soil away from soil pests. My young mange touts were savaged by weevils this year. Some are tender, and need to be started in a frost free area, then planted out when it is warm. Courgettes, squash, aubergine, chillis and tomatoes are obvious examples.
