choice of Rose..

    choice of Rose..

    I have decided I want to plant a rose in te corner of my garden to grow up and along the fence. I want a rose that is fragrant and pretty. A single flower is fine. Something that will have a long as possible flowering season. be vigourous enough to grow along the fence but not take over.

    The soil is sandy and well drained and there is an ash tree in the neighbours garden, just over the fence from where I want to plant it. I live in the south Wales Valleys in case that has an influence?

    What colours do you think would do well in that spot, and how much shade does it get? That could help narrow the field

      it is under the canopy of the ash tree so can be shaded but it is south west facing corner. I am not too fussy on colour but something bright maybe white or light pink to stand out?

        Mme Alfred carriere? Light scent, white (blushed with pink) vigorous climber, repeats and copes in almost total shade on the north facing side of my house.

        If you could let it grow into the ash, as rambler would look good depending on ash height.

          Dreaming Spires is a favourite of mine, it repeat flowers and has a lovely fragrance. The Generous Gardener also smells beautiful

            If you want a rose that flowers repeatedly, the ramblers tend to have just the one flush of flowers. So you need a repeat climber that copes in semi shade.

              Well, I'm no help - my favourites probably aren't bright enough. Anyway, my all time favourite is Roseraie de l'haye, but I also like Munstead Wood and Rosa Gallica Versicolour. Rambling Rector is a lovely white one that a friend once had. Unfortunately you'll need to search to see if any of them are suitable, as I'm no Rose expert I only know what I like!

                There are not many fragrant climbing roses that flower well in shade, but there are a few that tolerate it better than most.

                Three climbing roses that have light blooms, have fragrance and can tolerate some shade are Golden Showers (yellow), Kathleen Harrop (pink) and Mme Alfred Carriere (white)

                    We are currently having to move a climbing rose due our 20 ft. Honey Locust tree which is casting too much shade - see thread 'Rose Help' - we have a Rambling Rector and a new climber called 'Welcome' which is a glorious bright orange in other more open parts of the garden which are both fine. The conclusion I've come to is that on the whole roses don't perform well in shade.

                    I would check the David Austin website as it's packed with advice and hundreds of different roses so you'll be bound to find one that suits.

                    I suppose it depends how much shade there is where you want to plant it but I would be cautious if the tree casts shade all around - perhaps if its just on one side it would be ok.
