  • Tall Teds.

In previous years, I have grown King Edwards from shop bought spuds with good results. However this year I was kindly given some seed potatoes off a fellow grape. They are now 3'-5' tall.....................they look really healthy with plenty of flower buds just waiting to burst. Is it normal for King Edwards to grow so tall?

Is that normal for them BB? I wonder if the dry spell we have had has had anything to do with it.

I hope there is as much growth below the soil as there is above............

My potatoes are tall this year. People keep walking passed commenting. They took off really quickly and haven't stopped growing. I wonder as the soil never got really cold they had a flying start.

All my other varieties have been "normal". It's only the King Teds that have gone crazy.

Are you a bit shady on the plot, BM? They look as if they are growing up to the light. They look extremely healthy, mind!

I know Hazel, that would be my first question as well if I didn't know they are in the open.

One of my fellow plotholders has harvested quite a few spuds and noticed that the soil down at spud level was really wet still- maybe an after effect of the wet winter?
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

We're growing King Edwards BM and the foliage is about 4 feet (up against the shed in the photo)

It was quite striking when it got that tall but all looks healthy so I'm presuming it's fairly normal.

Sarpo Mira topped out over 6 ft last year , couldn't believe the growth rate or the size of crop, taste a bit indifferent though

The haulms on all my spuds have been large this year for some reason. Certainly done no harm to the yield of new spuds.

The story goes that for main crop the bigger the haulm the better as it all goes back into the spuds as it dies off. This of course could just be an old wives tale, but we shall see this year.

I'm glad it's not only mine that have unusual growth.
