  • Sorry newbie question

    Hi

I have recently acquired some space for growing some fruit and veg, is there much that I can start from seed now, from the looks of it I can still sow beans and peas, radish, etc but was wondering if anyone could suggest what else I could sow now please.... or would I just be best buying plants? ?? Don't really want to spend much on plants if I can grow myself! I have the use of a small greenhouse and live near Poole Harbour so right on the south coast. THANK YOU so much for any advice you can give.

You can still so all of the salad crops right the way up to the end of July.....Beetroot, spring onions, radsh, lettuce, etc

I'd also sow sweetcorn, peas and beans, courgettes, silverskin onions, parsnips and leeks. I only planted my sprouts and swede out yesterday so you could probably do them too.

I'd personally start it off in the greenhouse and then plant out from pots or cells.

Andy has given you a good list so I'll add Kale to it that way you'll have green throughout the winter.

Also, although it would be considered late, if you had the space you could still get some potatoes in. I have had a quick look and you can still buy seed potatoes on ebay- I would suggest first earlies which take about 10 weeks. Assuming you don't get them till the end of the month, if you get them in the ground or a container pronto you could get spuds from the first week of September

Admittedly its a bit of a punt but I would do it

I sowed some dwarf french beans this morning! The packet says they can be sown until July.

I've still got some seed potatoes in the shed which need planting, I'll probably chuck them in this week and see how they fare...... I'm sure they've got more chance of producing something in the ground rather than in the shed. Everything's still an experiment for me at the moment aswell, so I'm not exactly going by the rulebook this year.

                        Hi guys

Wow thank you so much for taking the time to reply, you are all so kind and helpful, I really appreciate it! That's great that I have so much I can still sow. Have been to the garden centre this morning and got myself a few plants mainly nice sturdy tomato plants plus 2 cucumber plants. Plus of course Lots of seeds :-) I will be growing quite a bit in pots and containers this year, sorry didn't mention that before as I just don't have the time (or energy at the moment) to prepare all the ground we will be using although we intend to have it all sorted for next spring, so there is limited amount that can go direct into the soil at the moment. A friend has sold me cheaply a Patiogro she never used so will make the most of that too probably for salad leaves,* radish etc. Have researched what will be ok to do in pots and needs to go in the ground.
Andy that list is fab and helped with my seed shopping today, forgot to get kale seeds Bren but will get them this week, we love kale.
Bigmally yes weird time the result of a weird evening/partial night shift!
Trix - that site is FAB some such lovely and sometimes unusual veg, I will definitely be getting some seeds from there. That guide is great. Kitty thanks for confirming the recommendation. John and Floyd I will get some seed potatoes ordered today, sounds like it's worth a try! Chilli - got dwarf bean seeds today and Chris I have a shady area so will get spinach seeds too.
Thanks again everyone I am feeling much more confident now.

Potty thanks too, if I have room in the ground may do some cabbages too.
