    Can you contain hydrangeas?

My son bought me a beauty for my birthday. It's such a deep pink it's almost maroon and I have nowhere I'd like to put it in the ground. I do have several very large fancy pots.

I had one in a raised bed in my garden Flo, and it has never thrived. I think it was fully dead before Rosie pulled it up this spring - just as well as dogs and hydrangeas are not good for each other.

My only advice is to keep it well watered with rainwater if you can - that is where I went wrong, I am sure- whatever the link says about letting the roots go through the pot into the ground. Mine clearly hadn't read that bit.
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

That's the same predicament I was in last month! A friend gave me a lovely blue one but I've had little success with them in the garden. They seem to need a lot of water. anyway I've potted mine up and I'm hoping that I will have better luck with it than my previous ones.

Yeh...they need a lot of water to keep them looking good. We have one and it is very demanding.
We stayed in a village in Tuscany a few years ago and the church was surrounded by loads of potted hydrangeas...they were huge and looked utterly superb...even at 40C for several weeks!
Yup regular watering I think is the answer...and maybe extra feed?

I have 2 hydrangeas in containers and have to say they do very well with minimum attention from me. I bought a blue mophead one in 2012 and a white shooting star variety from the Tatton flower show last year. The blue one was bought in spring 2012 and immediately potted up with ericaceous compost and flowered all summer long until first frosts. I pruned it late winter/early spring last year and it didn't do too well with flowers - took so long to get going it was all over before I got many. I pruned at the same time this year and it is doing wonderfully well with masses of flowers. The shooting star one was pruned at the same time this year and that has grown by at least 2 feet in about 2 months. It has quite a few flowers, although not as many as the other one. Apart from pruning I pretty much leave them to their own devices. I just water if there has been no rain for a while and I gave them both some tomorite as the flowers started forming. I might add a seaweed feed to the water occasionally but really they have pretty much thrived on neglect.
