Those aren't native plants. How long has your mum lived in the house?

Not sure, but it's very pretty. The leaves remind me a bit of canary creeper, but the petals don't seem to have the fringed shape.

I'm stumped tbh. I thought it reminded me of Passion flower but I can't find anything that looks like it. It's might be worth asking on an exotics website.

I'll be really interested if you find out what it is. It's lovely!

At a glance it looks like Tropaeolum speciosum but in this case the flowers are orange instead of red.

My mum moved in in 1954, this plant appeared last summer,it grows really fast, reached the top in about 6 weeks after I pulled it out because it had completely smothered a ten foot high by 8 ft wide yew tree

How very weird! Does it cling with tendrils, suckers or just ramble? Does it smell? How big are the leaves? Does it come from roots or a corm/tuber?

Shame about that - it is a Tropaeolum peregrinum- edible flowers and one of the rarer plants in the garden.

Still got plenty left, these pictures are of the re growth after I ripped it out.think I will leave it now as its so attractive, can't decide if the fragrance is coming from this or the shrub it's growing on

No tendrils just seems to grow up , has almost sticky stems like a hop

Wow! Lucky you for having such a gorgeous climber. I would be very happy if it was in my garden.

I think the shrub it's growing on is a mock orange (philadelphus) they smell fabulous!

I'm not convinced it's either T. speciosum or T. peregrinum. In fact the flowers just look the wrong shape for a Tropaeolum.

I wish I was either a proper botanist, had better reference books or were a more skilled G00gler, then I might be able to offer a more constructive suggestion...

Ah, yes Martin - how about T. Brachyceras?

Nice site, Jeanied. Maybe you've got it! But...

The second picture from snakeshack shows a very distinctive leaf form: the leaflets joined up at the base to make a single 6-lobed leaf.

The picture of T. Brachyceras from Wikipedia shows the leaves clearly but they don't look quite the same:

In that picture the six leaflets seem to be separate.

The flowers look a bit different as well, the Wikipedia pic shows the flowers with short stubby spurs (don't know the technical term!) while snakeshack's plant seems to have long pointy ones.

If snakeshack could take a close look at his plant and confirm the leaf and flower shape for us against the wikipedia picture then I will be able to go to bed happy.
