  • Dead heading roses

Hi when dead heading my roses do I just remove the petals or the whole flower?

Snip off the flower stalk just above the last decent leaf.

With any deadheading you are aiming to remove the seed head so the plant doesn't think it has done its work for the year and stop flowering. Removing the dead flower tricks it into flowering again to set seed again.

Although I like collecting rose hips too for making cordial later in the year.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

...and don't just pull 'em off with your fingers. Always use clean, sharp secateurs, to avoid causing damage, or spreading disease.

So just to clarify I cut off the whole flower (petals and middle bit)? Sorry to sound thick, my first roses 😊

Imagine you're cutting a flower for a vase - you'd cut the whole flower off with a bit of stem.
