rust on onions

  • rust on onions

    have been away forsa few days and come back to find out my onions are covered in rust. do i just leave them or do i pull them up. any help appreciated

    I get it every year on my leeks, but not the onions

    "Dispose of all plant debris at the end of cropping...Rusts are not able to survive on dead plant material" so it's OK on the compost heap. Same for blighted potato foliage

      i dug one up and its my garlic and not onions as i had thought

        Leave them until ready to harvest. I pulled a couple of mine the other day as they were starting to lean. I always get rust but doesn't seem to be too detrimental.

          Ditto ^^ if you are concerned you can trim off just the badly affected leaves with no detrimental effects to the plant,although I don't bother for the reason noted above
