  • Broccoli Help!

    Hi

This is my first year in veg growing and thought everything was going well, particularly with my tenderstem broccoli. However in the last few days they've looked a little limp during the day ( recovered after sun down) but I just put this down to the heat. Today though one looked particularity shaky and i gave it a little nudge and it more or less fell out of the ground and stem looked v. damaged below ground. Pic attached. Any possible ideas on what's gone wrong would be gratefully received!?

    Thanks

    George

Cut worm, cabbage root fly or blackleg but I think that just affects sprouts

Mixu, did you notice any small maggoty things in the soil? These would indicate cabbage root fly. I had a couple of broccoli plants which suddenly keeled over like that last year, and there were quite a few maggots when I dug them out (this year I've used cabbage root collars, and so far so good). Or if it's cut worm, you'd probably also be able to find the culprit in the soil nearby - a thicker grey coloured grub.

At least it doesn't look like club root, which would be a bigger problem.

        Hi

Thanks for the replies. Yeah I had a bit of a dig around after i'd pulled them out and did notice some white maggots in the soil. I had put some collars on the plants but they were homemade so perhaps not robust enough a defence. I'll make some more and I've ordered some nemasys grow your own which should hopefully help. Fingers crossed i'm not too late for the other batch of broccoli and sprouts i've planted out!

        Thanks again
