  • World Cup

Well it's nearly upon us, and in celebration of that fact we had a World Cup dinner where we managed to honour 13 nations that qualified:

Firstly we had a cheeky glass of chilled fino sherry by way of an aperitif (Spain)

Nice bit of local English steak.

Accompanied by French fries (which as we all know, were a Belgian invention), some Courgette (sounds French!), and a little side salad of Mizuna (Japan), Feta (Greece) and tomatoes (which originated in the Andes, so I'm counting that as Ecuador!) drizzled with Olive oil and balsamic (Italy).

...all washed down with the last glass of last night's Aussie Shiraz and the first glass of a nice Chilean Merlot.

Then we fancied a bit of cheese and biscuits later on. Emmental (Swiss) Gouda (Dutch) and Jarlsberg (Norway...yeh I know they're not in the World Cup this time, but it needed eating up as was beginnig to overpower the smell of my slippers!). All with a glass of Port(ugal).

Note: no haggis, leeks or Guinness were involved in our meal. (Now if that's not a red rag to a bull, I don't know what is)

Of course I will be laughing on the other side of my face when England lose to Costa Rica and are on the plane home after a week!!
    Are y'oroight booy?

I love it when the football is on. (OH only watches the big national Games) It means I don't have to sit through another one of his collection of about a million DVD's and am legitimately allowed to do other things, like potter in the garden, without being called "mardy" while he is watching the footie.
Dogs have masters, cats have slaves, and horses are just wonderful

Love the big tournaments although only just starting to get into it all this time. Used to go to the tournaments and our honeymoon was in France in '98 but just watch it on the TV now. Did think about going to Brazil but the costs and logistics were ridiculous so soon sacked that idea.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Alison, I can heartily recommend the Womens World Cup... in Canada next year which is a bit of a trek but no further than Brazil! Me and Our Gert went to Brazil v Equatorial Guinea in Frankfurt in 2011, cheap tickets, relaxed atmosphere and just generally fun all round.

Compared to the Mens World Cup with its hooliganism and rip off merchants (flights, hotels, etc all being hiked to 400% of normal price) it was a breath of fresh air!

Went to a couple of the women's European Finals when it was in England in 2005 but used to play a bit back then, admittedly not very well and my knees wouldn't take it now . Actually Canada would be nice, somewhere I've always thought about going but doubt we'll go. The men's matches didn't used to be a rip off, in fact Japan was fine (although obviously the flights weren't cheap) and the infrastructure was amazing. Re the hooliganism, I've been to loads of matches were the press make a massive deal out of a very small number of people being idiots, with 99% of the fans just having a good time. Think the only time I've felt intimidated at a match was Italy v England in Rome in the final qualifier for 1998 and that was the Italian police / security who pointed guns at us then locked us in the ground for about 3 hours after the match had ended telling us there was a riot outside. They even turned off the water in the toilets. When we got out we discovered there was no trouble outside but people had missed flights and trains. The only trouble had been during the match with the police charging some of the fans, thankfully not the section we were in.

It's not all about results, it's about conditioning, match fitness, team gelling and the fact we couldn't hit a barn door...
