  • Blackberry canes question.

This year my blackberry has thrown up five fat new canes where it's only managed three before. Should I allow them all to grow or should I cut back the weakest? They all seem pretty sturdy.

I wouldn't worry at all, just train them to the wall / fence or however you do it and they'll be fine. I always train mine to the right one year and the left the next so it makes it easy to cut off the done wood.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Cheers Alison, I didn't think I was going to get any canes at one point then five fat ones sprouted.

I would let all the canes grow; any leaves the plant produces will gather sunlight and power more root growth. Any leaves which are removed reduce the plant's sunlight-gathering power and weaken the plant (hence why not to harvest more than half the leaves from rhubarb).

If some of the canes are weedy I would remove them completely during the winter. The canes which are growing this year will carry fruit next year.
