  • STOP! Don't Kill the Aphids!

I recently managed to capture the following pictures of bumblebees feeding on the sweet excrement of aphids colonies on fruit trees.
Some of my fruit trees were literally 'buzzing' with bumblebees, often several bees per tree at any one moment. Some of the pictures are fairly poor quality but they had to be taken in a hurry!

So if you 'nuke' the aphids, you're probably killing the innocent garden friends too!

      Great photos!

You're so right. Aphids are a vital food source for baby birds, ladybirds and other things ...

I have to say my Sorbus Vilmorinii - which is just going out of bloom at the moment - has been absolutely covered in bees for the past few weeks - bees of every shape and colour. A lovely small tree for a very small garden.
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

I didn't know about the bumblebees though, I must be honest.

I can see the logic though. Must be a good food source, especially handy in the lull before the flower season fully kicks in.

Congratulations, good to see you back I did wonder where you had gone. This explains what all the bees are doing around my black currants which are totally covered with aphids and the ants which are farming them, luckily they seem to be ignoring my fruit trees.
