Will potatoes chitted in the DARK be ok?

    Will potatoes chitted in the DARK be ok?

    I got given a bag of free Setanta seed potatoes a couple of months ago. I didn't envisage having room for them so put them in the garage and forgot about them.

    Well! Now I have room and remembered they were there. They have long, pale shoots, but were chitted in the dark which seems to be a big no-no! Does this mean they won't be any good? Presumably this is how non-chitted potatoes sprout in the ground?

    No probs at all ..if the shoots are very long- ie more than3", I'd snap some of them off and get them planted!

      There is a school of thought that potatoes don't need to be chitted at all so I'm sure yours will be OK - as Nicos said, get 'em in, you've nothing to loose

          I'm no expert, however since spuds are planted in the earth and grow towards the light then I can't see there being a problem. I found some in the shed which had grown through the net bag to a good 6 inch lengths, planted them and they seem to be growing fine.

            No, that won't be any problem. They'll be fine.

            I doubt any variety of potato stores better.

            Setanta is an excellent choice. Very resistant and a marvellous spud for cooking.

              If you've got the space and time to plant them then go for it

                i've chitted potatoes in the dark, the light, and i havent chitted my maincrops at all this year, dont really think it makes that much difference, thanks, g :3

                  The only reason not chitting in the dark is recommended is that the shoots will be brittle and break off easily. If you are careful when planting they will be fine.
