  • Novice advice: Do I need to worry about my tomato plants?

So about 2 weeks ago I brought 3 different tomato plants to transplant into a grow bag in a small walkin greenhouse.

As im completely new to this I did as much reading about general care as possible and then stubbled upon disease and pests which naturally made me paranoid.

So after checking daily ive now noticed a few things that ive become worried about. From dull lifeless looking plants to transparent leaves and white dusty residue.

    Please help....Darren

Nothing to serious by the looks of it but a few pointers may help.

Do you avoid getting water on the leaves when watering? Water droplets on the leaves during bright sunlight of very high temperatures can damage them.

Do you open your blow away during the day? Very high temps won't help and it will also increase the humidity which can cause Botrytis (grey mould). Ventilation is important to reduce the risk.

Don't over water, keep the compost slightly moist but no more.

I more point I noticed your black ties are quite tight, if left this could cause stem damage as the plant grows.

Great advice already and especially about the ties being too tight, but you have little else to worry about, they look good, well done Welcome to the Vine. Keep in touch.

Thank you very much for the fast replies.

The ties I do realise are not very loose, but I was aware and was planning to make them larger as the stems grow.

I was aware to keep the plants dry but I paniced and used an 'organic' pesticide due to finding black and whitefly. Which my girlfriend seems to think is the reason for the transparent leaves...but since sraying them we have had next to no direct sunlight.

Again thank you for the warm welcome. Seems ive chose a nice friendly bunch

In the day I tend to leave the 'blowaway' open about a quarter of the way, as I read air flow is important.

Also is there really nothing to worry about with picture No.3, which is also the plant in the middle on picture No.1. As the leaves seems to be disappearing (being eaten?), very dull colour compared to the other 2 plants and some of the leaves are upside down and wilty looking

Hello and welcome to the Forum.
What varieties of tomato are you growing? Some types need their side shoots nipped out, others don't - and some need more staking than others
If the leaf damage is mostly on the lower leaves it could be that they were damaged either before you bought them, or when they were being planted out. I wouldn't worry about them myself.

Potstubsdustbins just about covered the lot I would certainly pat attention to ventilation, one hot day while your at work will do em in. open it all the way. Have you fed them yet? The Shirley F1 I know about, it has a huge amount of toms on each truss and they are quite big, last year they were so heavy on mine the trusses started to tear away from the plant and I had to support each truss on its own cane.

Yes I fed them for the first time yesterday. How often should I feed them at this stage? Im really hoping they start to look alot heathier soon. Im hoping all this worry is just due to my novice experience. I just dont want my effort to go out the window already with ruined plants. Kinda wish id never read about the pests and disease ha

You seem to be suffering information overload, have a cuppa, watch the ants, if they are doing no harm then leave them alone. Your toms look ok to me, if you look hard enough you can always find things to worry about but usually it is nothing serious. just enjoy watching them grow and eating the finished product.

                              Great post, dear Bill!

Firstly, a very warm welcome to the forum.

Secondly, I concur totally with Bill. Gardening is meant to be fun!!!!! An escape from the stresses and strains of modern life.
By and large Mother Nature does all the work. You've just got to give her a helping hand.

And unless you want to blast everything to hell with toxic chemicals expect to lose some plants and seedlings along the way. It's Nature. Everything's trying to eat and get by, the same as you are. But more than enough will get through for your needs.

As Bill said just enjoy watching them grow (learn new things along the way) and enjoy eating the finished product.
