  • Over wintered onions, how to speed them up?

My over wintered onions, are beginning to thicken at the base, which I good, cos I want them to hurry up and ripen, but should I be feeding them now? And when will they be ready ( daft question I know) approximately?

    Thank you

Overwintering onions only mature about 2 weeks before spring planted onions. Usually in June.............but use em quick as they won't keep!

A handful of pelleted chicken manure might give them a boost.

Some on a couple of weeks ago Wendy, some veggies seem to be in the ground for so long.

That's because they're in the ground over winter, when nothing grows much, if at all, for several months

The thing about overwintering onions is that although they may appear to be doing nothing the do grow a root system and they are in the ground ready to go when spring arrives, if its a wet or cold spring you may not be able to plant spring stuff out.

Does any one know why winter planted onions are supposed to not keep so well? is it true or another myth? If its true I am up the creek without a paddle because I planted 150 sets last October and need to be able to store some.

Best make lots of onion soup Bill.

If you make sure they are well dried before you hang them to satire and use them first, am sure they'll. be ok.

You can always freeze them Bill...

That's what I do,even the nice green soft leaves, still got some left, also stops you from getting them mixed up with the later ones, very handy for when time is short.
