  • Self set onions?

All through the winter I have watched little onion plants? come up in one of my raised beds. They are now 12" high and very healthy, but in the wrong bed! I wanted to grow my beans there this year... When I lifted a clump they looked like thin spring onions, but with red bulbs, growing about three inches below the ground. They smell pretty strong too. Should I split the clumps and plant the single plants? if so, how deep? And does anyone know what they are? There may have been onions in this bed before, but not sure what...

If they are in a clump, my first thought is shallots..........dig the clump up & re-plant them somewhere else if you have space...........a pic would be good.
    P.S. Welcome to the vine

      A red spring/Japanese onion perhaps?

Yes, water the clump, fork them out and plant them individually. Not deep, they aren't sets: just so the roots are covered and the plant is able to stand upright

Thank you both! Will try to put a picture up tomorrow - if I can work out how to do it!
If they are shallots, should I plant them deep, as they were before? Or sit them on top of the soil with just roots buried? ( they would probably fall over!) Sorry to be so dim, I certainly don't 'know my onions' ;-)
