  • new peach tree

hello, this is the second year for my peach tree which i keep in a big pot. it's on a small root stock and should only grow 5 - 6 feet tall.
i have lots of lovely green leaves and nothing else, no flowers at all. should it be producing flowers now or is that it no fruit for this year.

No flower buds at all? The pear trees round here are just finishing flowering, so I would guess you won't get any fruit this year.

My peach tree has finished flowering and has peaches the size of grapes . I don't think yours will flower this year - sorry.

My dwarf Peach tree flowered back in March (I only got it in February) much to my surprise even though it was under cover. I hand pollinated the flowers and I think have taken and are growing. I got the flowers before the leaves so I'm guessing something happened to yours to stop it flowering.

I don't think I've got anything grape sized - pooh! I wasn't expecting anything this year but once you've raised your hopes............

The good news is that peach trees do flower and fruit when very young, but two years is pushing it a bit especially in a pot. Peaches flower very early, even the late 'peche de vigne' type, so if you had no flowers you definitely won't have any fruit. Be patient and make sure your tree is well fed and kept healthy all summer and it should surprise you with lots of flowers and a few fruit next year. If you have a sheltered sunny corner in your part of Gloucestershire it would probably do far better outside. The main problem with peach trees is protecting the flowers and tiny set fruit from frost, but you can easily rig up a cover on an outside plant against a wall. Peaches in pots will never really give you abundant fruit, unfortunately.
