  • Enrolling for the RHS course at Durham College.

    Hey there,

I'm starting the RHS level 2 in September, which I'm quite excited about. I know a fair few on here seems to have done it to, so I was wondering what jobs has people went into after doing the RHS? How easy have you found it to find a job?

The guy on the phone was really excited about the course and told me its world recognised which I'm quite happy with as I would like to move from England in the future.
He said they go on trips, take in their own plants that they grow etc etc I think the only bits I'm worried about is the exams.

    Thanks guys

    Hi,
Am thinking of doing a RHS course at one of my local colleges. Well actually its about a 40 min drive to the one that is actually doing the course I want.
Which one have you enrolled for I was thinking of a the one about plant growth and propagation.
Is your course full time or part time?
Wanting a change work wise so little boy goes to school in September so now's the time. Hoping to get a job is horticulture or do another course to improve my skills. Want a job that I can enjoy don't want to drive a desk or work on a checkout in a supermarket again.

      Hi there
sorry for the delay in getting back to you, When I spoke to the guy who takes the course he said it will be the RHS level 2. Im quite busy atm with work so havent had the time to look further into the course but he said that you could go on to be a landscape gardener, work in garden centers or places like the winter gardens (its in sunderland) stuff like that.

Im going to ring him when I finish the course Im on atm to see if I would not be better off doing the level 1 first. There is other things at colleges that shows you the basics so I think I might have a look at something like that first.
My local college where it is is quite out the way also bout 20 miles

Are you going to Houghhall college 4390evans? I did a Phase two level three Sports Turf Management course there.
I think the level one is just basic gardening it isn't until the phase 2 that you can do the specialist stuff like arbor, glasshouse, turf etc.

You need to get hold of the course sylabus. Also get the level 1 sylabus and choose which one you fancy depending on your existing skills.
I've always been interested in gardening and didn't want to waste my time on basics (Level1) which I felt I already new.
Without wanting to sound big headed I was one of the few who got a Distinction in phase 2 level 3 so felt justified in missing the level 1.
Level 2 would serve you better in the jobs market if you can manage it.

You don't want to start something and get bored with it by being told about something you already know about.
That's why I was thinking about level 2 I might know a bit of it but not all of it and I'll learn something new.
