  • How is best to protect my hanging basket strawberries?

    Hi all,
At some point I'm going to need to net my hanging baskets to stop the birds eating the strawberries. I'd like to do this with some bird friendly netting, but I'm really unsure of the best way to actually cover the baskets without the netting touching the fruit. Do I need to make a frame around the basket?
The netting I have my eye on is:

The baskets are fixed like below:

I would really appreciate someone more in the know about what to buy or make to protect these.

I would get some old net curtains and fix them behind the fence. Drape them forwards over your baskets and Bob's your uncle.

Although, reading this I'm tempted to try the bird scarers by hanging CDs and foil around the baskets.

Very interesting. Will that not also stop the insects and sunlight getting to them though?

You don't need to net them until they start ripening.

Old CD's blowing in the wind works quite well

Ok thanks guys. The reason I wanted to net them now is because the little b&$gers are stealing the lining of the baskets for their nests. I don't mind that too much, but they're making a bit of a mess of them. I'll give it a try hanging some foil and CDs out there to scare off the majority.
