Can anyone give some advice on a good potato to grow now that is a bit of an all-rounder. We mainly use pots for mash, roast and chips

I like Marfona but have never chipped them, however, what I like and what you like may be different. Crops grow and taste different on different soils.

You'll need a maincrop or 2nd early then. Have a look here Buy Seed Potatoes

Thanks rustylady. I thought I would still be able to use 1st early pots but will look into 2nd. I was thinking of growing them in a bed 3 meters by 1 meter. Is that big enough?

You can use first earlies - but they are usually dug as soon as they are ready, for use as "new" potatoes. If you leave them in a bit longer they will bulk up more.

Wilja are a great all rounder and one that farmers grow on a regular basis.

The farmers grow Wilja because it is fairly heavy cropping. I am not too keen on the taste...

If you buy seed potatoes in a garden centre etc. you will be able to buy them loose. Thus you could buy 3 or 4 of each of several varieties, and then grow them and see which you prefer - to then grow next year

Taste is such a subjective thing, and will be influenced by your soil conditions etc., that I think trying several varieties that other people recommend is more likely to get you one that you really like.

Having said that, last year I grew the 10 most popular Tomatoes varieties that all my gardening mates swear by, instead of my normal choices, and I didn't like any of them!

                  That's very sound advice.
