    chickpeas.

    Has anyone grew chickpeas?

    Im thinking of putting some in on the other side of my trellis as I have garden peas on one side. Im wondering if there is any specific type I should get?

    chickpeas can be grown in the UK but they need to be started off in February to get a decent crop. Even then, you need masses of plants to get a decent number of them. They need warmth, a light soil, free drainage and absolutely no slugs! I think April is too late.

      aw shame, maybe next year then.

      Is it chickpea seeds I buy or is there other names for them?

        Get some seed sown in modules now and get in the greenhouse! In 3 weeks they'll be big enough to transplant, then hope for lots of sun and dry weather and you'll get a crop of some sorts.

        I filled a medium sized kilner jar last year (still got a few left), but 2012 was crap, too wet. So it's hit and miss, but if you've got the space why not have a crack. He who dares Rodders....

          I can only find sprouting chick peas on ebay, are these the type I need?

            I used seed from a packet of dried chickpeas bought at a supermarket, rehydrated them and planted them in modules before onward transplant. For me the harvest didn't justify the space taken up.

              Maybe in the frozen north they do, but over here they are grown the same as peas, ie chitted then planted out in March/April.

                Last year i read up on how to grow. Think i used those in larder soaked overnight and put in grown around june ss a trial. Had small pods with each containing 2peas. Definately dont need to buy specialised seed
