If someone describes a pot as a 10" pot, is it measured by width or height?

      Width, not height.

It gets confusing when some pots are measured by how many litres they hold.

Yup, the one that is different is circumference which is the measurement all round the pot at the top.

In that case lets be correct top diameter if its round, top width if its square, bu99ered if I know what to call it if its octagonal.

Now, I'd always thought it was the diameter across the bottom of the pot. Don't know why - perhaps because the measurements are on the bottom? I have just measured some pots indoors and it is across the top. Learn something new everyday!

Ahhhhh was it straight across or across the diagonal on square or a tangent on the round?

If its a circular pot its the circumference.
