  • Ants in my compost bin

    What should i do?
I've never seen it before so am clueless about how to get rid of them, apart from getting rid of all of last years composting waste.

What type of compost bin is it? And where is it (on soil, on slabs)?

Its too dry. You need to water it and turn it more often.

How often should you add water to compost? I've never done this.

It's on soil as i wanted to encourage worms to get in there and help break everything down.

Ah, now i have watered it before now but haven't done so for a couple of months.
The last time i checked it for wetness i found that it was really wet at the bottom but relatively moist near the top.

Do you think it's worth me hosing it down and emptying it a couple of days later?

Take the lid off it and let the clouds decide.

I had a huge nest in a Dalek last year, they made it into the best compost I have ever had. They did no harm in the garden that i could detect.

They will move out when you give them a bit of notice too!

Sounds like you could do with turning the compost. Give it a good watering and turn it every couple of days to disturb the compost and the ants will soon move on.

                    Whenever it's too dry

Seriously, I empty a can of water onto it every time I add a couple buckets of weeds. It also gets "potty water"
