  • Which Bank?

I've just taken over as allotment Treasurer for my sin's to add to my job as allotment Secretary.
The bank account we have is with Lloyds/ TSB and its a savings account.

What I think the Association should have is a current account enabling me to set up standing orders for our two biggest bills...........allotment site rent from the Council and water rates.
The nearest LLoyds to me is miles away anyway.

I had thought of a Post Office account as there are loads of PO's around within easy reach.

Anyone got any good ideas, or use a bank which is particularily suitable for Clubs, Associations and Societies?

We're with NATWEST for our allotment banking.
Have no idea if you can set up standing orders for stuff.
We have a cheque book though.

Is a cheque once a year too much effort?

I would say most, if not all, Banks and Building Societies, will set up a suitable account for you. I would suggest choosing whichever is handiest for you, logistically, and go in and talk to them.

My wife used to be the treasurer of a local charity that banked with Lloyds/TSB... She found that using internet banking was a breeze with them.

The rent is paid twice per year and the water rates are quarterly. It saves getting red letters and I think you get a discount for a standing orders?

          Whats a cheque btw?

Used to be on the committee of the local snooker league and we used the local (Ipswich) Building Society, I think they had fractionally preferential rates for local concerns. So might be worth trying your locals BS. Just don't use Santander...shysters

Online banking is so convienient and Lloyds is the easiest of the lot, no need for a card reader to logon, you can set up or cancel dd's and sto's in seconds.

We've used First Direct for years. As they're set up for phone / online that's they're core business and they're much slicker than their parent company of HSBC. On the occasional time I need to go to an actual branch you can use the HSBC ones.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

We're with Lloyds standing orders, online banking, & a deibit card 2 signatures for cheques but each have a debit card so we can pay bills with those. & most plotholders pay their rent online. Works well for us

If you need two signatures for a cheque, surely individual debit cards defeat the purpose?

Our plotholders are 'cloth cap and whippets' and 95% aren't online so it will still have to be cash initially.
I may have a word with Lloyds (when I can find one close by) as it will probably be easier sticking with them but changing account to an online current account with standing orders ability.

I'm with the co-op for my business, which means I can pay in cheques and cash what not with the post office. As I'm a member of the FSB (federation of small businesses) all my business banking is free for life (not the 2 years most banks offer!).

I won't say they are perfect as their online banking interface isn't upto the level of Lloyds, however they do have online banking and you can manage your account online. For me its the practicality that I only have to walk up the road 200m to bank not go all the way into town 5 miles. Simple logistics.
I'm only here cos I got on the wrong bus.

My business is with Unity Trust. It's internet-only so there are reciprocal arrangements with local banks to provide cash facilities if you need it. Free banking and it's a breeze to use.
