    Rabbits have eaten my leeks!

    Just covered one of the raised beds due to rabbits stealing a few onions. Got to the allotment today to find they have eaten most of the green tops of my leeks on the bed we were planning to cover this weekend! Arghhh
    Anyway there is a bit of greenery left - can they be salvaged or if the tops been eaten are they no good?

    Leeks are pretty tough plants and should be fine if there is some greenery left. I suggest you cover them up pretty quickly though as the rabbits are likely to be back. They are quite tricky customers to keep at bay as they are quite capable of digging under fences and netting.

      Wabbits are a bit crafty ....they'll let your leeks grow a bit and then be back to harvest them again If they're last years seedlings there wont be a problem with them still growing, if they're this years they might not survive ...

        Ooh sneaky rabbits!! Ok well going to cover them on Saturday as no chance to get there before then so hopefully they're still there! I planted them in October - they were a tray of plug plants in the clearance area of garden centre for 50p but still annoying!

          I remember when I first got a lottie . We'd grown some onions from seed and had planted them out ..dead chuffed they were growing away nicely ...until I went up one day and found a chuffin wabbit had given them a haircut, all neatly chopped to the same level

            I think they will go to seed this year, so you need to eat them before they start doing that - by end of April I would guess

            If they aren't already reasonably fat (which I doubt if they were sold in October) then I don't think you were going to get much off them - whether mauled by rabbits or not

            Garden Centre shouldn't have sold you plug plants of Leeks in October IMHO ...

            ... unless ... there is some way that they will not go to seed this year and will fatten up beautifully this year and give you a fabby crop next Winter - rabbits permitting! But my money is on the Leeks thinking this is Year 2 and consequently going to seed.

            My whole plot is fenced against rabbits (lots of them in farmland around here), no other way to keep them out that I know of and they are SO destructive otherwise.

              Yeh they were a long shot just based on the fact we had lots of empty space so I thought we'd just give them a try, didn't expect too much but for 50p I thought we'd have a go! They are still pretty slim. If there's not much change and they survive the rabbits ill probably just dig them up and use the space for something else!

                If yopu can afford the space then let a couple go to seed and save the seed for next year....they have wonderful flowers
