  • F1 luscious sweetcorn

My sweetcorn seed pack arrived today and I was expecting the typical yellow colouring associated with sweetcorn however they are a reddish colour on top of yellow?? Any idea if they are f1 luscious or a different variety, thanks

Shelly! I presume you ordered these seeds as "F1 Luscious"

No definitive answer from me I'm afraid! But assume "Luscious" being a Bi-coloured variety, the seed would be Bi-coloured too!

Thanks, I think the picture on the order page confused me as it's a yellow cob, I'm new to all this so still learning

They are likely red from being coated with a fungicide. I had some 'red' Luscious F1 from Moles seed, even though I asked for untreated

I've grown them the last couple of years, good crop and very tasty. Cobs are pretty, mostly yellow with splashes of white.

My understanding is that super sweet varieties are "over-bred" in the sense that they want to rot before they manage to germinate, so the fungicide is intended to help with that. I chit mine, on damp kitchen paper, before "sowing" so fungicide wouldn't be needed.

Wash hands after sowing, and don't cook any that you have left over

I agree with the others it sounds like they are coated with something. Why dont you mail them and ask?

Supplier's website, or seed packet, might say?

I have had Sweetcorn seed (not this variety) from Moles that was treated - can't see anything on their website to that effect. On eBay looking for F1 Luscious some vendors said "treated" and others were silent. Seems rather important to me that there is some indication as I imagine could be harmful to someone unsuspecting?

One would hope if the seeds were bought as organic they would be untreated?

But did he say what the "organic coating" is?
