  • Sprouting kale

    Dear knowledgeable forumers!

My Cavolo Nero is starting to go to seed and is sprouting buds all the way up the stem, in a similar way to PSB would. Question is can we eat them in the same way? I'm stripping the leaves off before they go bitter but the buds really do remind me of PSB.

Anyone tried it? Steamed with a drop of butter and a sprinkling of nutmeg and mace?

    Ta in advance.

    Chippy

I add mine to a stir fry or use them in omelets.

YES YES YES. I picked some more this afternoon - they are absolutely delicious.

Curly kale sprouting buds can be used the same way.

They're even good raw, eaten straight from the plant (lotty snack).

I love them too, a real treat. I told my sister about them last year and she was convinced she wouldn't like them but she steamed some and her and her husband and my niece were fighting for seconds.

That's good to know as I also have kale plants sending out flowering shoots. But as I also have more PSB than I can eat right now, I don't need the kale too! Typical

So glad you asked that as I was about to ask the same thing about kale. I am planning to serve in a creamy cheese sauce.

                              Kohl rabi spears are great.

I think pretty much any oriental green tastes nice when they start going to seed. I tend to just throw then into a stirfry.
After the radish pod revelation if its going to seed I do a quick check to make sure its not poisonous (you never know ), if its not eat it and see.
                              So far, so good.
