  • Onion sets

    Hi everyone

I have bought a load of onion sets and bulbs of garlic today I live in Nottingham is it too soon to sow these directly outside or should I be doing them undercover ?? I have seen something about starting them in seed trays in an un heated greenhouse just wanted to know what you guys thought ?

    Thanks

    Justin.

My sets are in the unheated GH in modules, they normally go out a little later round this neck of the woods. I do them in modules to prevent root disturbance when I get round to planting them out.

Mine went out in February under fleece. Last year some were planted in late February under plastic, and the rest went out on 2nd March unprotected. Both survived and produced nice onions, if a little small (which was probably due to the hot dry summer). Considering last March was one of the coldest on record, I don't think they will come to any harm if you plant them now as long as your soil is not too wet. The variety I grew last year was Sturon.
