  • Blackberry bush - plant in ground or container?

I have a blackberry bush to plant this weekend, it will be going in an area of light shade. I was going to plant it in the ground, but after visiting a friend who has to keep digging up the blackberries in her garden to try and get rid of them, I am having second thoughts! Would it be better to grow them in a container, to stop them taking over? I have no idea of the variety, they were a cheap bush from Lidl. If they can go in a container, what size and shape should I use, round or a trough, and what type of compost? Thanks

No, don't use a container. Plant it in the ground next to a fence where you can put up some horizontal wires to train the canes along.

Blackberries don't send out suckers like raspberries do, so the roots aren't really a problem. The problem with spreading arises when the canes aren't tied in to a support. Wherever they are allowed to droop and touch the ground they will root themselves and produce a new plant.
