  • Moving planted Onion, Shallot and Garlic

    Hello All,

    Hope all is well...

I have a slightly annoying scenario here, which has come about my inability to think things through and plan properly... Last year was my first year growing onions from sets, went really well, I was pleased with my modest but tasty harvest... They also lasted ages so we decided to grow some more this year but up the scale...

I put in 150 onion, shallot and garlic sets/bulbs I think about a month ago... and in a nutshell... now I want to move them hahaha... ridiculous I know but what do people think? A few of the garlics have some sprouts, maybe a couple of the onions but not too much going on... I read somewhere that someone moved some garlic buibs with a bulb planter... what do you guys reckon?

Reasons for moving is as simple as this, I only have my reatively narrow garden to grow veg in and the middle is grass and I just grow in a 4 foot deep boarder to one side. Unfortunately I wacked them in right near the patio and stuff and have since thought I'd rather I had some more showy bits up that end as opposed to relatively short, uninteresting onions... Its the end we sit at after all...

By the time the weather is good enough to sit out in, those onions and garlic will have grown a lot and will have lovely dark green leaves...I think rows of onions look very smart myself
I am a bit of an allium addict tho...

As regards moving them, probably doable....if you do, make sure to take as much surrounding soil so as not to damage their surrounding root..
As I said though, I would not do it for the reasons you are contemplating doing it for... But I am not you
Do remember too that the alliums can be harvested around July, Aug time, so you could still transplant something nice in then...
I dream of a better tomorrow, where chickens can cross the road and not be questioned about their motives....

You could always go for the potager effect, mixing flowers in with vegetables. Then you won't have to disturb your onions.
Just don't plant flower bulbs like daffs or tulips in amongst your onions: to the untrained eye they look very similar, but daffs & tulips are poisonous

Although they may not be doing much on the surface they have probably sent out quite a few roots, just try not to disturb the roots too much. Maybe you would be better off just planting a new lot, they are fairly cheap.
