    Advice needed for pea varieties please

    In growing marrowfat pease and they seem to be doing really well do far, I'm wanting to grow some more 'birds eye' style peas the small and sweet ones, any recommendations? Thanks everyone

    Pick them smaller? What variety would you call a "marrowfat"?

        You can buy petits pois seed but I have never tried it. I like Hurst Greenshaft, which have really long pods full of plenty of peas. As has been said, if you pick them early they will be small and sweet. If the pods are becoming in any way wrinkled or yellow the peas will be starting to go starchy.

          Balmoral was the favourite with the kids last year, I like Meteor, the purple podded ones were OK but a bit on the hard and starchy side.... However that may be being fussy, at the end of the day all peas are fabulous

              Like kW too, pick 'em young for petit pois or however you spell it

                I like kelvedon wonder for small peas but as a main crop I grow Alderman , which is an old fashioned climbing pea, grows over Ten feet high and crops over a longer period giving you more crop for the amount of ground space.its worth the hassle of putting up the netting as they are excellent " marrow fat " peas and being open pollinated you can save the seeds.

                    Peas are brilliant for seed saving as they fertilise before the flower opens so always come true to type, means you can grow several types close together with minimal risk of them crossing. In fact it's actually quite difficult to mix two strains although of course you can always get rouges.
